Golf balls: From The Early "Featherie" To Modern Dimpled Round Objects
Golf as it was known in it's hey days, when it was played on the eastern Scottish coasts, was a lot to different to how it is played today. Then, golfers used ancient apparatus to play golf, which was certainly disorganized as well as not at all formal. The golf balls and clubs used during those early days were both made of wood.
From Wood To Feathers To Gutta
In the early seventeenth century, the construction of the golf ball underwent a sea change and feather balls were first introduced, which were called "Featherie". Such Featheries were made by hand and were quite expensive, usually costing more than the clubs themselves, which made them the choice of just a few privileged lucky players.
Another change to the golf ball came about when the Guttie ball made its appearance, which was quite prehistoric, to say the least. It was made out of rubber-like sap of the Gutta tree that used to grow in tropical regions of the world. They were easily molded into spherical and round shapes, and were also relatively inexpensive to purchase that could also be repaired by reheating as well as reshaping.
Comparing the guttie with the Featherie, it was found that the latter traveled further because of the smooth surface of the guttie that could not travel for long distances. People who were developing golf balls came to realize the advantage of having dimples on the surface of the balls (much like the Featheries), and modern day golf balls still have this feature to aid in their traveling longer distances.
The dimples are also useful in providing the golfer with the ability to apply backspin on the ball, and with the advent of the Haskell ball in 1905, golf balls have since been unchanged in their appearance, which is how modern balls today appear also. The dimpled golf ball has been officially used in all golf tournaments and was standardized in size as well as weight in 1921.
As of now, the golf balls have a lot of selection with different balls being chosen for different golf games as well as conditions. You can choose the golf ball to control it better, or even to send it over longer distances. Golf balls are the product of a special concept in physics that takes into consideration a number of factors including air pressure, aerodynamics as well as structure of its surface.
